What Causes Crackling Sound In The Knee While Climbing Stairs?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 May 2017
Question: Some of my close relatives on my maternal side including my grandmom, mom and an aunt have knee related issues. My grandmom developed the same only in her late 70s while my aunt had a knee replacement in her early 50s. My mom has always had severe knee swelling since early 40s. she has had undergone multiple treatments since like injections, physiotherapies, fluids removed from her knees to reduce the swelling, medication etc. She still suffers from knee related issues and swelling even after standing up for 10 mins. I am in my early 30s and my knees are already noisy ( usually a crackling sound when I climb stairs or bend them). my knees also hurt after standing for long. My weight is normal and I engage in light activities. Please advise on how I can lead a healthy life to avoid having knee related issues in the future. Please recommend exercises to improve my joint health. I have knock knees with the right knee being more prominently bent and flat feet.

Brief Answer:
Physical therapy will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A painless crackling in knee can be harmless or may be due to decreased joint lubricants which can be helped with regular supplements like Glucosamine sulphate. You can do the hamstring stretch right away. You can do the quadriceps stretch and start strengthening the thigh muscles using the rest of the exercises after consulting a physical therapist.
For this condition should undergo a graduated flexibility and strengthening program. So I advice you to discuss this with your physical therapist.
Having wide hips, being knock-kneed, or having flat feet(fallen arch), can predispose you to patellar tendinitis because certain body mechanics will place more stress on this area with activity.

You need arch support specially during the activities like running, jumping, long walk.

I hope this answers your query.
