What Causes Cough And Sore Throat?

Question: my 7 year old grand son was sent home from school because he has a cough. he said his neck feels dry when he needs to cough, whatever that means. he has no fever or runny nose nor does he have a sore throat the pharmacist recommended Robitussin cough for children like I said he does not feel bad its just a mild cough.what do you recommend?

Thanks for asking on healthcaremagic. Your grandson seems to be suffering from common cold. Like in adults, they are generally caused by certain viruses and is not a cause for concern. Antibiotics are ineffective in such cases and it heals spontaneously in 5-7 days. Often it has an allergic component. Give him some antiallergic like levocetirizine.

In normal situation the respiratory secretions are dilute but when the become gelatinous, they need to be coughed out. Stem inhalation should help by diluting it and I would recommend that. Cough syrups are commonly used but I do not think that is required.
