What Causes Cough And Sinus Pain With Swelling In Neck?
Question: Hi there Dr
I would like your opinion on my current health . Over the last week I developed a hoarse cough and sintus pain round my face . I have a feeling of swelling in my neck . I have a headache a fever 37.5 I feel very fatigued currently feel so unwell I have taken to bed . I also developed a pin prick rash a few days after the cough cold like symptoms on my neck arms torso legs . The swelling in my neck is very uncomfortable . I was quite concerned with the rash . My breathing has been quite fast and feels restricted and coughing a lot . I'm asthmatic . I have tried to take a picture of my throat but there doesn't seem much room between my tonsils and the dangly bit in throat there seems to be some tiny pin size dots on it and some clear blisters on the roof of my mouth . I went to the doctor the other day was given doxycycline and steroids but no diagnoses my glands feel swollen . Thank you XXXXXXX

I have read your note and looked at the photos. You most likely have a viral infection in your throat. The viral infection can cause the rash and swollen lymph nodes in your neck. It is common for doctors to give people with asthma an antibiotic just in case they develop a bacterial infection. Doxycycline would cover it for example, if you had a bacterial sinus infection or a bacterial bronchitis. Steroids can help calm down the inflammation and help with your asthma. Hopefully you will feel better soon. Drink lots of water, take a multivitamin and extravitamin C and take the doxycline and steroids as prescribed.

Its a bit vague which virus could it be there are many ? I would like your opinion on what it might be ?kind regards XXXXXXX

That is why we can not develop a vaccine to try and prevent the common cold. There are so many different strains of virus that no one vaccine could cover them all. Viruses however commonly cause the type of rash that you have and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

So you wouldn't be happy to give it a guess that it could be this or that ? For example glandular fever or tonsillitis or strep or ...... Yes the list goes on

It does not appear to be strep. With strep you do not have a cough usually and your fever is higher and there are pustules on your throat.
Glandular fever also known as monoucleosis is one of the viral infections that is possible but you need a blood test called a monospot to confirm that.
