What Causes Constipation?

Posted on Wed, 23 Apr 2014
Question: I am suffering from severe constipation. I haven't passed a stool in about a week. I am taking Coloxyol and Senna Tablets. I eat a balanced diet of fresh fruit and vegies. Do these tablets also make you pass urine a lot? I am also suffering from lack of sleep. I have been going 48 hours without sleep and then when I do get to sleep, it is interrupted.

Brief Answer: Drugs maybe the main cause Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query, I am pleased to be able to assist you. I believe (from your description) that you have two main worries; chronic constipation and insomnia. From your current drug history, I want to believe that one or more of your drugs maybe responsible for the constipation notably oxycontin and endone. Since they have a pretty good role in managing your chronic back pain, I believe it will be unfair to ask you to start tampering the doses until you can completely get rid of them. Given that you were already on coloxyl with senna which is a pretty good medication for constipation, it will be wise to get a full medical check up in order to make sure that the constipation is not due to bowel obstruction. So, I suggest you see a doctor for that. If there is no evident obstruction, then maybe trying another laxative medication can be the best possible alternative. Now, looking at the issue of insomnia, you seem to be already on a valium which should normally handle that. But, if you are not having any better sleep, then it is most likely that other factors are involved. They are several factors that play around insomnia and those factors need to be identified (mostly psychological). A good psychiatrist should guide you through achieving proper sleep. They are several other sleep medications that can work better but most are prescription medications, so you will need the help of a doctor. Hope this helps and wish you the best. Please feel free to write back if you have any further worries. Dr. Nsah
