What Causes Constipation Postpartum?

default
Posted on Thu, 14 Jul 2016
Question: Dear doctor,

I delivered a baby girl on 14 March, 2016. But after my delivery I had trouble with my bowel movement. My gynaecologist gave me a laxative and things were going fine. But whenever I stop taking laxative I get constipated and ends up in bleeding and piles. Recently I started taking a herbal laxative as I thought it would be better than Allopathy. The contents of the laxative are nellikka, thannikka, kadukka, irattimadhuram, sunnamukki.
1. I wanted to know if it's safe to take this laxative when am breastfeeding.
2. I also want to know what can be done to cure my problem as taking laxatives is not a permanent solution.(I am drinking lots of water and taking fibre rich food)

Brief Answer:
post partum constipation

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and following is recommended guidelines:

1. After delivery it is possible that your muscles might have lost their tone (muscle used in delievery & bowel movements are same) so get yourself re examined

2. Are you taking regular iron supplement since they can cause constipation?

3. Nellika (amla), thannika (baheda), kadukka (harad), irattimadhuram (madhuyashti), sunnamukki (swarn patri) is very much useful in constipation but since is a laxative thus can cause diarrhea in your baby ( through breast milk) so what you can do is:

1. Take: old brown rice, green gram, chick pea,green vegetables,bottle gourd,water, papaya XXXXXXX grapes,musk melon,raisins, dates,orange,pears,guava,apricot, honey,milk.

2. Avoid: newly harvested rice, black gram, peas,banana,potato,spicy/junk food, late nights, sedentary lifestyle.

3. Herbolax tablet/capsules: 2-3 capsules with warm water ( before dinner)
4. Purgation with olive oil is best and free of side effect
5. Early morning: eat 10 cashew nuts and 4 raisins and drink water after coming out of bed
6. Do exercise which increases the tone of abdominal muscles and stimulate peristalsis like:
. Straight leg raising
. Scissor kicks
. Sit ups
. Walking, jogging
