What Causes Constant Sharp Pain In Right Scapula?

Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: My wife has very bad sharp constant pain in her right scapula, she has had it for about 2 weeks now and it is not getting any better. When it first started she was putting heated pads on her right shoulder which didn't help, so then she went to outpatients at hospital and they gave her Cyclobenzaprine 10 mg. she was taking them every 8 hr but they made her very sleepy. When she woke up the pain would return shortly. That's was XXXXXXX 28th she got prescription. Pain is still very severe so she went to a message therapist but that didn't work. The therapist told her she should be putting ice packs on the shoulder blade area which she has been doing since February 4th. The pain sort of subsides when the ice pack is on it but shotly after she removes the ice pack the severe pain returns. The pain moves from in deep in shoulder blade to under arm but back toward shoulder blade. Her pain is so bad she can't take it much more. What is wrong and what can she do to cure it?

Brief Answer:
It is most likely muscular pain.

Hi,
Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern.
Your wife is having muscular pain in scapular region. Treatment of it is rest and analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief. If ibuprofen is not effective then strong analgesic such as tramadol can be helpful. muscular relaxant such as Thiocholchoside
is helpful in reducing spasm. Vitamin B and C is helpful in recovery. Icing is helpful. I found in my clinical practice good results with injection triamcilone locally. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.You can further investigate it by MRI of the region.
Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
Wishing your wife a good health
Take care

How much longer before she will have less pain? Will doing some certain exercises help?

Could it be pneumonia symptoms?

Brief Answer:
With rest, analgesic should be less within a week.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
Pain should reduce within a week of starting treatment , but rest is very important to reduce it. It is advisable to rest and exercises are not beneficial. It is unlikely to be pneumonia as she has not having other symptoms like fever and shortness of breath . However she can get her x chest to rule out it. Rest already been discussed. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
