What Causes Constant Headaches?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Feb 2015
Question: Hello DR. I am referring to my wife's constant headaches. They are turning our lives inside out with no relief
in sight. Her Dr. prescribes pain meds but to no avail. The have been going on for a very long time,(years).
The Dr. has just given her some TrokendiXR medication. He is an absolute jerk as far as I am concerned. Conferring with a few of his patients, he is nothing but a pill pusher. Needless to say, I am scared to death,

I fear that her cond. is far worse than a migrain. She goes to bed with a thunderous headache, doesn't get but a few hrs per night, is up most of the night, and wakes up after a few hrs. with this headache continuing all day long. She is just turned 64 yrs old in Dec. Most of the day, she lies in bed holding her head. I can't do anything for her. The Dr.s here in FL, where we live are not accepting any new patients, and so we're stuck. I am a patient at the VA hosp in Lake City myself.
She takes an assortment of meds and I wonder if there is a reaction going on. If you can give us any thoughts as to which ave. to take, we would really appreciate your kind help. I know this isn't an easy case,
and you will probably need more info. Thank you so much for your kind interest.
Regards

Brief Answer:
She is being treated for migraine and this will respond, no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for writing to Health care Magic.

I can understand your concern and no need to be worried.
The symptoms you have mentioned indicate primary headaches like migraine or cluster headache or vascular headaches.

Your doctor is treating her with trokendiXR, which is topiramate used to treat the primary headaches.
Along with this tablet I would like to use a pain killer or analgesic drug for pain relief.

In episodes of acute migraine or cluster headache severe headache is noticed but no need to be worried as treatment is in right direction and your wife will be fine.

In case the headache dose not respond then I would like to rule out other causes like vascular headaches. This can be done by blood tests like Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and eye examination.

Hence I advice you not to worry now and continue treatment as advised by your doctor and in case if it does not respond then she needs further evaluation to rule out vascular headaches.

Hope the information provided is helpful to you.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX Thank you for your quick response to my question. Since you mentioned pain medication, I have a list of meds. that she is now taking.

Fiorinal, Zamaflex, paxil (30 mg), Restoril (30 mg), Valium (10mg), and
Tramidol (50mg).
Before she starts on the Trokendi XR, We would like to know if there are any conflicting symptoms between these meds? Looking up Trokendi on the net, we found a multitude of problems that may occur while on it. They are very serious &
concerning conditions, and very scary to her. Thank you for your kind attention in this matter. We will await for your response.

Brief Answer:
She can take the drugs, no problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX
Thank you for the follow up question.

I reviewed your history.

The drugs she is taking does not interact with Trokendi XR, hence no need to be worried.
Tramadol is a potent pain killer drug and can be used.

These drugs are used in the treatment of primary headaches. The treatment appears to be in the right direction and I advice you to continue the treatment as advised by your doctor.
Hence no need to be worried. She will be fine
