What Causes Congenital Hypothyroidism?

Question: Hi, We are blessed with a baby girl on 23 Feb 2014. After her birth hospital did some lab tests of her blood. I am just going through those reports. The ultra TsH report dated 24 Feb 2014(taken a day after her birth) gives result 9.87 uiu/ml. This number is not lying in that normal range given in report. Is it normal? Please advice.

About 1: 4000 infants suffer from congenital hypothyroidism. 4% of infants born to mothers bolnging to endemic iodine deficient belt in India have biochemical evidence of hyperthyroidism . Examination of blood ( cord blood or baby's blood ) is done after 3-4 postnatal days. TSH levels more than 50 uiU/ml in cord blood are diagnostic of neonatal hypothyroidism . Hello Doctor, Thanks for your response. Just another question - Baby's mother is already having the Thyroid problem and she takes a Thyonorm 25 tab daily. Is Thyroid problem is hereditary? What are the chances that thyroid problem will be there with Baby also? Is their any defined age when thyroid problem occurs in general?

Brief Answer: No genetic association has been observed. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thaks and welcome to HCM with your follow up question. Primary hypothyroidism occurs due to Iodine deficiency, Thyroid dysgenesis(75%), ,defects in the synthesis of thyroid hormone, Autoimmune thyroiditis(acquired) and central due to defects in hypothalamic - pituitary axis.
