Brief Answer:
Give steam inhalation.Use saline nasal drops to open nasal blocks.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Children between 6 month and 3 years of age often get a condition called bronchiolitis which is a viral infection. It may start with a cold. Even if not a bronchiolitis, the cough and colds are mostly viral in origin. In such a case it is important to get the chest examined. The primary treatment is with nebulization. Steam inhalation is the home version of nebulization. Sit with the child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. Water vapor will be in the air and will get breathed in. It will reach deep inside and would dilute the cough and will open up the airways and would provide relief. Increased respiratory rate above 60/min or chest indrawing in children of this age indicates respiratory distress. If you feel the child is having respiratory distress or wheezing or if the child becomes lethargic, you should take her to the hospital without delay.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Trying to treat a 6 month child at home might not always be a good idea

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back. I know that you do not want to see a doctor. But unless you are aware of the warning signs to look for, the situation may worsen. That is the reason I have mentioned them. As of now, the things to do would be steam inhalation and application of nasoclear saline nasal drops.
