Posted on Tue, 22 Apr 2014
Question: I am having chronic neck, shoulder and upper back pain from compound "knots". The pain or "sensations" have moved into my left deltoid. Motrin, heat, ice and self-message have not work. I have been to a message therapist which provided temporary relief which lasted about 3 days before coming back again. I have also changed out my pillows, which provided no help. What can I do to relieve the pain and tension?

Brief Answer: Due to muscle spasm Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. The symptoms you have described are more likely to be symptoms of muscle spasm. These could be posture related. Though self limiting, it need not be underestimated. All you need to do is correct your posture habits, like appropriate neck position while working on computer, avoiding pillow while sleeping, or while making sudden movements. I assure you this discomfort will go away unless you do something to aggravate it in your routine. You can even do neck isometric exercises, which you can learn from a physiotherapist near you. To get relief from the pain and for quick healing: 1. Do hot fomentation at the site. 2. Apply local anti-inflammatory gel 2-3 times a day. 3. Take anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and local swelling or inflammation. 4. Do not lift weight or try to do exercise that involve painful muscles. You should try local pain killer sprays. It does not seem much serious issue but pain should be controlled. If it still fails to subside have it examined and investigated by your Orthopaedician soon and get oral muscle relaxants prescribed. I hope this answers your query. In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out. Wishing you good health. Regards. Dr. Praveen Tayal.
