What Causes Chronic Hip Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Hi there. My 71/2 year old daughter has been complaining her "hip hurts" for a year and a half now about once a day. It is actually the area at the bottom of the left rib cage probably. Feels pain for 2 minutes then stops. She is a very active dancer but this pain comes at random times. Today she had it after she woke up and again walking down hall at school. It is always in same area. I once did blood work on her for celiacs because she sometimes says stomach hurts too. She was MIssing the antibodies necessary to test for this and gastro said it was only with colonoscopy could we determine it. But she never has diarrhea. So didn't do it. What could this pain be? Should they CT scan her bones and organs?

Brief Answer:
Muscular strain, intestinal or stomach disorders

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

The fact yaar the pain is in the left side under the rib cage implies that her stomach may be affected. Also a part of the intestine travels in that region. Causes for such pain could be Gastrointestinal infections, worm infestation, peptic ulcer, lactose intolerance, muscular strain.

Since she is a dancer and the pain occurs on activity like walking, it could be muscle strain. If there are any tender points on her abdomen on touching, you can apply ice to that area to give relief. Let her take a break from dancing and give her rest for a week. If the pain gets relieved then it is muscular strain.

Give her a healthy balanced diet. Avoid gluten food and milk. She can have buttermilk and curds. Keep her well hydrated. Let her have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

You could consult with her Paediatrician for a prost physical examination and workplace to find the cause. An Orthopaedician consult can help look for muscle and ligament injuries. This may require an MRI scan.

Abdominal CT Scan may be required if he Paediatrician suspects intestinal disorders. Get her stool treated for worm infestation as well.
