What Causes Chest Pain On Coughing?

Posted on Mon, 28 Jul 2014
Question: Dr. Dangwal,

I am waiting to see the pulmonologist next week. I have been feeling pretty well, felt like bronchitis gone, no fever. I barely coughed during the bronchitis. Today, I have a deep cough and chest pain when I cough. No mucus. Not constant but fairly regular Why would I suddenly develop this bad cough after I feel no other bronchitis symptoms? I am very concerned that the bronchitis just will not go away or that something else is going on?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this cough that you have reported and the chest pain. I understand you had bronchitis and the symptoms have greatly reduced but for this new symptom of cough and chest pain today.

Cough and chest pain is not uncommon even in healthy persons. What makes this more concerning is if it becomes regular and last for days. Also, you did not mention any other concerning symptoms like difficulties breathing, fever, or excess mucus production. This means that there is no immediate red flag that needs to be addressed instantly.

I will suggest that you stay calm and relaxed. If the symptoms persist or new concerning symptoms like fever, breathing difficulties, etc. set in, you can see your primary care doctor while waiting to get fully evaluated by a pulmonologist for your pulmonary disease condition.

For now, there is no need and no red flag that calls for immediate medical attention. If new symptoms set in, then consider getting evaluated by your doctor.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and thank you so much for using our services. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you. I have recently been diagnosed with mild emphysema but the chronic nature of the bronchitis (acute 6 wks ago) has me concerned that my condition is worsening and moving into stage 2. That is why i am anxious but yiur advice to stay calm is good!

I also have some hoarseness and a sore throat. I have GERD, and wonder if it may be from that. Otherwise, is that concerning or mayberelated to slowly healing bronchitis?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

GERD is one of the common causes of sore throat and chronic irritative cough. Are you receiving any medications for this? If not, please talk to your doctors. A trial of omeprazole is worth it. If you are on treatment, then evaluating it to make sure it is effective would be very important.

The progression of Emphysema takes longer periods and so if the aggravating factors especially smoking is not controlled. The acute nature of symptoms make it less likely to be related to progression but rather an acute condition that needs to be addressed. I am leaning more towards GERD. Appropriate treatment would help tell whether this is the cause or not depending on response to treatment.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you and let me hear what your thoughts are on this.

Yes, i am being treated for GERD with Prevacid (long time). I have had more symptoms lately and will be having an endoscopy soon. I am having a little trouble swallowing. I think you could be right about the GERD. I am glad to hear that the emphysema is probably not progressing this quickly. I am still a bit in shock and denial about it although i was a smoker.

Thank you, this was very helpful.

Brief Answer:
Glad to hear this!

Detailed Answer:
Am happy to hear that you would get a[n endoscopy son. with worsening GERD symptoms and difficulties swallowing, the treatment needs to be evaluated and adjusted accordingly. let's patiently wait up to this is done before exploring any other avenues if answers are not forth coming.

You smoked cigarettes in the past. That is your past. Whatever bearing that had on your health cannot be reversed. Let us manage what we have at hand and stop getting too worried about what we can no longer act on.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank
