What Causes Chest Pain After Alcohol Consumption?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Feb 2017
Question: Hi, After a heavy weekend of drinking wine and beer 9 days ago my I experienced sharp pains in my chest area across my breastbone and surrounds. I suffer from sensitive intercostal muscle pains but this was quite severe. To satisfy myself this was not a cardiac issue I went for a brisk walk around the block and also did some sprints to get my heart rate up. All was ok. Since this pain my chest area has been very sore and I also experienced acid reflux and heartburn. I have assumed my stomach has simply reacted to the drinking weekend with a boat of reflux which in turn has aggrevated my intercostal muscles. My doctor has prescribed me Omeprazole for the reflux and Amitripuline to relax my chest muscles. 3 days in after starting the Omeprazole I feel quite shaky at times during the day and my chest muscles are still sore (almost like I sprained the area). Does my medication sound right or should I consider any other causes?

Brief Answer:
Drugs are fine

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX
Welcome,
This is Dr Sameer, Cardiologist.

Chest pain has many reasons excluding cardiac pain. It can be a muscle spasm, costochondritis (inflammation of join between bone & cartilage of chest) & gastritis.

Your pain sounds like acute gastritis which is pretty common after alcohol intake. You are taking right medicines & should continue them. Drink a lot of water which will eliminate the shaky feeling. If the chest wall is still sore, you can add Medicine like ACETAMINOPHEN (TYLENOL) 650mg twice daily after food, which is a very safe medication.

I'll also recommend you to go for a Tread Mill Test(TMT) & 2D Echo for detailed cardiac evaluation.
I hope i've answered your query, feel free to get back in case of any doubts

Thanks
Take care
