What Causes Calf Swelling After An Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: Hit in lower shin area by a cricket ball twice in two days my calf is swollen as is the ankle and a lot of bruising has come out. See pictures,

It did come up with a large swelling initially which was treated with an ice pack on Saturday. I then got hit in the same spot the very next day!.

I have used ice pack again. I am more concerned about the swelling or is that a natural reaction. I will go to my local GP or A&E is there is no sign of improvement

Brief Answer:
possible veins thrombosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank you for the query.

Please do not wait with it and see your doctor as soon as possible. Calf swelling after an injury can indicate veins thrombosis. You should have hard and painful calf also.
D-dimers level should be checked and Dopplers ultrasound done. Heparine treatment is necessary in case of thrombosis.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.

Regards.
