Question: I am a 67 yrs old male with no diabetes but a slight hypertension (140/80). For the past 2 years I have developed burning, tingling, numbness & pain in the feet. I also have sciatica with pain in the lower back, buttocks, hamstring & calves. My thyroid tests & Vit B12 level are normal. could my problem be related to a deficiency in Vit B1 due to alcohol consumption (I am a light drinker).

Brief Answer:
Vitamin B1 deficiency can commonly cause these symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar, a neurologist, here to answer your query.

If you would have presented to me as an outpatient,I would have told you that 'Yes-Chronic alcohol abuse very commonly cause peripheral neuropathy due to thiamine(vitamin B1) deficiency'. Its classical presentation is burning dysesthesias in toes and feet along with cramping pain in legs. This can be a likely cause in your case,if you have history of alcohol intake.

However, sciatica with pain in lower back, buttocks and calves, may be due to a separate etiology.Regarding this, please consult a spine specialist and get a Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of lumbosacral(L-S) spine done. This may be due to some degenerative process in spine.

For now ,you need to stop alcohol, start therapy with tab.optineuron and keep under observation.PLEASE TAKE MEDICINES UNDER A PHYSICIAN'S GUIDANCE ONLY.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have some queries, please follow-up else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.
