What Causes Burning Sensation On Tongue?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I have the sensation of a burnt tongue-as if I burnt it on a hot beverage days ago-except I never did-for the last month. My sense of taste is unaffected and carbonated beverages and spicy food seem to relieve the burning sensation if only for a moment. I practice excellent oral hygiene but I am a smoker.I am almost 4 months post partum and this started about a month ago. I am nursing and taking progesterone only pills and a prenatal vitamin daily. My tongue looks smooth and whitish with red tastebuds which are only slightly raised. To me it seems normal-maybe a bit more pale than usual. Any ideas why and when or how this could stop? It is more annoying than painful.

Hello XXXXXXX,

Thanks for consulting Healthcare magic .

Read your query and understand your concern as you have burning sensation on tongue and paleness dont be worried so much this can be due to some reason like :
-Hormonal changes .
- Drug induced .
- Oral candidiasis : commonly called oral thrush , caused by candida fungus .
- Oral leukoplakia : smoking induced .
- Oral lichen planus : stress induced .
- Frictional keratosis : Due to sharp cusps of teeth .
- Geographic tongue : Due to Nutritional deficiency , vitamin B 12 deficiency .
- Thermal burn .

Can you attach a report (image ) of tongue that will be more helpful to arrive at conclusion .

Based on details provided I will suggest you to try these remedies :
- Maintain proper oral hygiene , use tongue scraper to clean your tongue .
- Drink plenty of water in short intervals .
- Chew sugar free chewing gums .
- Avoid hot spicy food .
- You can apply ointment on tongue like triamcinolone acetonide (.1%) 3 -4 times a day for one week by consulting with your local doctor.
If you have smoking induced lesion you have to quit your smoking habit and start with antioxitants by consulting with your local doctor .

Read your query and gone through reports (image) you have attached as far as I have observed you have raised redish taste buds this can be due inflamatory( smoking induced ) ,Drug induced (medicine you are taking ) , or Vitamin B 12 deficiency .
There is nothing to be worried so much sarahahmad but I will suggest you to consult Oral surgeon for visual examination of tongue and treat accordingly . If needed you can go for investigations like vital tissue staining or biopsy.
