What Causes Bruise On Upper Left Arm And Arm Pain Inspite Of A Smoker?

Question: I am a 33 year old male smoker (since age 16), 6'3", 230 lbs. I have had very slight, unexplained bruising on my upper left arm and a slight achiness off and on for several months. The bruising seems to come and go, and I recently had a CBC done, which only revealed a very slight elevation in white blood cell count (my doctor said this was likely due to the smoking). There also seems to be a slight lump, which I can sometimes but not always notice, just above the bruising. I sometimes get similar mild achiness in my upper back near my lungs, but chest X-rays have come back normal. I'm worried about this. What could be going on, and what could I do to alleviate this?

Brief Answer: ? side effect of naprosyn Detailed Answer: Hi there.. Thanks for writing in. Have investigations like platelet count, bleeding time, clotting time, prothrombin time been done, to find out the cause of bruising. Another possibility is trauma can cause bruising. Did you accidentally hit your upper arm somewhere hard? The bruising might be a side effect of naprosyn. Do talk to your doctor regarding this. Get an ECG to rule out a cardiac pathology since the ache is in the upper left arm and you are a smoker. Please try to quit smoking. Do regular exercise 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Exercise releases endorphins which will make you feel good. Do sign up for yoga classes which will be beneficial in the long run. You might get relief from your persistent daily headache. Yoga reduces stress. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Dehydration can precipitate headaches. Sleep and wake up regularly at the same time everyday. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight if you feel that is the cause of headache. Eat meals at regular times. Hunger can also cause headache. Try to identify the trigger factor which causes headache and avoid that trigger factor. Hope this information was helpful to you. Regards, Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
