Posted on Mon, 28 Jul 2014
Question: I had histerectomy 10 years ago. It is about 10 weeks i have discharge which is not normal for me. I am taking progonova hormone pill for about 8 years. The discharge doesn't have odor, it was white and since last night it is brownish. I feel cold and have shivers at nights.

Brief Answer:
Visit a gynecologist as soon as possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
This discharge after so many years of hysterectomy can be due to
- senile vaginitis
- infection of vaginas or cervix
- rarely malignancy of cervix.
Senile vaginitis is the most common cause in your situation but other two can't be ruled out without a proper examination.
So in my opinion visit a gynecologist as soon as possible aso though chances are less but chances of malignancy cannot be ignored.

Till you visit your doctor
- wear cotton based loose underclothes
- change them regularly
- use condoms if secular active
- keep taking progynova as prescribed.
Wish you all the best

Dear doctor, i have reduced my hormone pill to halfe since two months ago. I have no sex sice 20 years ago. My cervix removed too. I wash myself few times a day and wear cotton underwear. I live in melbourne Australia and meet my gynochologist once a year. My last visit was february 2014. I arrive to XXXXXXX yesterday for a short stay of 3 weeks and became worry since i had the brownish discharge.

Brief Answer:
due to decreased dose of hormone

Detailed Answer:
I'm happy to hear that you have been so regular in follow up after hysterectomy and already following the instructions.
Important point in your follow up answer is that you have decreased the dose of hormones recently.
This is the reason for the discharge which started around the same time when you decreased the dose of pill.
The brownish discoloration of discharge is because of estrogen withdrawal which is similar to that which occurs after stopping contraceptive pills in patients with intact uterus

I'm my opinion wait for the discharge to ho by itself in a while in which time your body will get used to the decreased dose of hormones.
But in case it worsens or you develop pain or bleeding then you will have to visit a doctor which I know is a problem in a foreign land

But it will subside by itself and need for latter will not arise most probably.
Take care mam. All the very best.
