What Causes Blood In Urine?

default
Posted on Thu, 14 Jul 2016
Question: My wife is peeing blood. Went to ER urine test showed red blood cells obviously but no bacteria or infection. Blood work was normal as well with no infection and white blood cells were on the low side. Also CT scan was normal with nothing found. They sent us home with her to follow up with her doctor but she's still peeing blood. Just really confused please advise.

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description she should not be discharged this way without proper workup and stopping the bleed. Hematuria or blood in urine requires extensive workup to determine the cause.

Any history of trauma should be looked for.
Drug history including warfarin or rivaroxaban use should be ruled out.
As the CT was clear so kidney stones are unlikely.

Though a small stone may have been passed and this could be the resultant bleeding associated with passing that stone.

Urine routine examination and culture sensitivity testing should be done. Renal function tests and coagulation profile should also be done in this regard.

Tranexamic acid can be advised to stop the bleeding / hematuria if it's not subsiding.

please consult your doctor before taking any further course of action

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
