What Causes Blood In Urine?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Jan 2015
Question: I'm a 62 year old male. Former smoker. Blood appeared in my urine for the first time on Friday. Went to urologist same day. Given Cefuroxime prescription. Took on tablet, next morning urine looked normal again. CT scan this coming Thursday at the doctor's request. He also is doing a "culture" of the blood with urine from Friday. Question: Does the fact that the blood went away after 24 hours (with one Cefuroxime pill) suggest an infection?

Brief Answer:
This isn't proof positive for UTI...

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to HCM forum.
Thanks for writing to us.

I have gone through your query in detail, and understand your concern.

Blood in urine, especially painless gross hematurea in this age group needs evaluation to rule out any neoplastic lesions of the urinary tract.
The fact that urine cleared out on starting antibiotic alone can not suggest the diagnosis to be UTI. This need further evaluation. If the CT we are going to do shows no focal lesions, we can be confident. Further diagnostic procedures like cystoscopy is needed only if the hematurea recurs. Your doctor will guide you.

Anyhow, most of such cases are caused by UTI or benign lesions like cysts.
Let's see the CT report and culture report.

Hope I have answered your query.
Please be free to ask further questions if any.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
