Posted on Wed, 9 Dec 2015
Question: I am a 73 yr. old male who had enlarged prostate with surgery Oct 17 2014. Have used catheter since March of this year. Noticed a few days ago what appeared to be blood clots but worm like. Their length is about 3". About 3 cm width. Today I have more (several). Nov 11 admission to hosp. for diagnosis of angina. Med changes. These "worms" appear deceased. Catheter swap-out on Nov 18.

Brief Answer:
These are blood clots and not any worm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you had enlarged Prostate and operated in Oct 2014.

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Why you have been catheterized again in since March 2015?

The red blood clots of length for 3 inches are due to hematuria resulting out of Catheter Cystistis .

These are blood clots taking the shape of catheter lumen looking them like a worms ..
Do not worry these are not worms .

Your Urologist will ask for Urine culture and give you appropriate antibiotics as per culture report and give bladder wash .That will help to resolve the issue .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

In 1948 in North XXXXXXX there was an epidemic of polio. I had been in the first grade for about one month, maybe less. Very sick at home. We lived on a dirt road. I never asked my mother how I was taken to Mercy-Charlotte for diagnosis. Paralysis both legs and up my spine to mid back. Full length leg braces until age 13 yrs. Worked on regular jobs for 41 years using Canadian crutches to retirement 2004. Diagnosis of spinal stenosis thoracic 11-12 about my mid-sixties. I have had to return to a wheelchair as when a child. Wheelchair bound now for about two years. In March, I requested my urologist allow me to keep a catheter as an indwelling because I had an episode of not being to urinate at all which took me to the ER. I have changed my goal to no catheter. My prostate had enough cut away to take pressure off of urethra.

Brief Answer:
You need to reevaluate status of Enlarged Prostate again

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up .I really appreciate and admire your positive approach towards life .

If you wish to have catheter free life you need to consult your Urologist again for revaluation and to explore whether an endoscopic surgery of TURP to resect the enlarged prostate can be done .

.Resecting the prostate will make your urethral passage free of obstruction and hopefully you will be able to pass urine thrugh urethra .That will help you to have catheter free life .

Thanks and Regards.
