Question: I have had bright red blood w my stool twice. No other symptoms. Should I be concerned? I have had occasional light streaks from wiping in the past, not frequently and not recently.

Brief Answer:
Do not worry but needs evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,
Thanks for contacting HealthcareMagic.

There is no need to panic. Fresh blood in stool can happen due to many reasons that may range from minor to major. Commonest causes are haemorrhoids and fissures. Worrisome cause can be some kind of growth in rectum.

The best way to know the cause in your case will be a colonoscopy. Get in touch with a gastroenterologist near your place who can perform colonoscopy on you.

Meanwhile if you pass hard stools, you can take some laxative to make them soft. Softening of stools will help in reducing the blooding in stool.

Best wishes.

Should i be concerned if it stops, or only if it continues or occurs again? My insurance will cover a colonoscopy in two years at age 50.

Brief Answer:
If it stops that will be good

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,

If it stops and does not occur again, then it is perfectly fine. But if it keeps happening again, then I will suggest to undergo a colonoscopy early, even though chances are that it must be something minor.

Best wishes,

Dr Dinesh Kumar Singal
