What Causes Blood In Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I have had bright blood in my last 2 stools. They have been pain free with no straining, so i don't think it's just tissue tearing as has happened before. I have had no pain anywhere. The only thing different I have done lately is started taking magnesium chelate in high doses as a supplement, and also have taken alot of antacids(3-4perday).
Could this combination be harmful and causing blood in my stool. I had my colon checked last year by my Dr. and was told it was ok.

Brief Answer:
Following answer to your query.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

You are experiencing recently bright blood on your stools. However you are pain free and this is very important because your symptoms are suggestive for anal hemorrhoids.

Please keep in mind that high doses of magnesium chelate are responsible for diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset, which exacerbate hemorrhoids causing bright blood on your stools. Moreover prolonged use of Magnesium chelate on high doses may cause bowel mucosa damage.

If you were my patient I would like to recommend:
- To stop taking Magnesium chelate (for the moment).
- To use preparation H.
- To go in the ER for anoscopy if the thing seems to get worse (there's an increase on anal hemorrhage).

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
Dr. Klerida
