What Causes Blood In Stool And Stomach Discomfort?

Question: Hi there! I am a 57 yr old male, no real health issues for many years. I have, over the years, excersized quite regularly. I am not more than slightly over weight. I do struggle a bit with low blood sugar. In the last few months I have developed a bit of blood in stools....it can be a bit reddish to dark. A lot of times a tiny bit of slimy stuff, sort of darkish right at the end. Sorry to be so descriptive about all this! Actually I have also taken some pictures of the stools in case it was helpful. Wow! Yuk, eh! Also....I have gradually got a bit sensitive stomach and, at times lately, a sort of painful swallowing. This only occurs at the beginning of a snack or meal. It seems there is a bit of gas that has to go from the top of my stomach and then swallowing is just great. I really have no lower abdomen pain or even discomfort for the most part. I drink a lot of fairly strong tea with milk and have cut back some on this.....less tea and weaker. Also try to drink more water. For a while I also drank a lot of Arizona ice tea which has some gensing....likely not a lot.....and sweetend partially with corn syrup. I try to eat fairly gentle foods and take some tums.....anti acid. The stomach discomfort seems to have slacked off a fair bit. Any ideas?

Brief Answer: Gastric ulcers can be the cause of bleeding. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing your query. After reading your post,it seems that you might be having gastric ulcers which may be bleeding. I would advise that you should get yourself clinically examined and investigated by a Gastroentologist. Endoscopy is very helpful in confirmation and treatment of gastric ulcers. The test need to be performed on priority. Please visit your physician / gastroenterologist. In the interim, it is utmost important to apply following precautions: 1. Avoid spicy and oily foods. 2. Avoid being empty stomach for long periods. 3 .Avoid mental and emotional stress. 4. Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any. 5. Avoid self medications, especially pain killers and steroids. 6. Drink lots of water daily. You can take an antacid like Omeprazole 40mg once a day before meals for relief. Antacid in gel or liquid form will be helpful as they form a protective coating over the damaged mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help. Regards. Thanks.

Brief Answer: GERD can cause irritation in esophagus. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for your response. When excess acid is produced in stomach, it can regurgitate upwards towards esophagus (GERD-Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), thereby irritating the mucosa of the esophagus. This can cause painful swallowing. I hope this answers your query. If you have any further doubts, please mention. Thanks.
