Question: Hi I had a vasectomy 2 weeks ago, my doctor told me that was ok to have sex again, so I try alone to get confident, already did couple times and I have blood,is blood at the beginning and then the semen looks clear, so is this normal? How long will it last? Is it better to not have sex yet or opposite ? What to do, thank you

post vasectomy

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You recently had a vasectomy and you have noticed blood in your semen. This is normal and will go away in 1-2 weeks. I am surprised that your doctor said it was okay to have sex after vasectomy. I would suggest that you need a sperm analysis before engaging in sex with your spouse until you have a negative sperm count. She could still get pregnant. You need to deplete the seminiferous tubules where sperm is stored before you can safely engage in sex without risk of pregnancy. You also need to have that negative sperm count to be sure they cut both tubes. It is not unheard of to fail to identify the right tube and not actually perform a vasectomy. So again get a sperm count it is the only way to be sure the procedure was successful. If your doctor declines then get another doctor. you have a right to have the test and must get it done.
