What Causes Blood In Saliva, Sore Throat, Cold, Cough, Vomiting And Nausea?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: hi I have a question..
Since past 3-4 days, there is a trace of blood in my saliva occasionally when I pull my saliva up and try to spit. I suffered from typhoid in 2012 and thereby had heavy antibiotics post which I had minor esophigitis. Ganatron and mucane gel treated it at that time.
I am not experiencing any cold. cough now, although I do experience acidity after having spicy food or skipping a meal. Since past 3-4 days I occasionaly see blood in my saliva when i consciously try to pull up my saliva and spit. I have taken 2 tablets of ganaton and drank mucane gel 2 times uptil now.
Also, I started smoking 2-3 years back, but I am a light smoker (Not more than 4 cigarettes in a week and sometimes skipping it altogether for a month/week.
Last I smoked 7 days back.
I am not experiencing any other symptoms (Sore throat, cold, cough, fever, vomitting, nausea etc)
Although I do get up with one nostril blocked in the morning if I sleep in AC. Also, I snore a lot and occasionally feel dryness in my throat.

Brief Answer:
Get Investigated to be sure..

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Most probably you have Allergic rhinitis or bronchitis that caused dryness of the throat and can lead to blood in the sputum or saliva.
In case blood is only in saliva and not in the sputum or nasal discharge or with cough then the probable source of blood in saliva is your local teeth and gums.
In case you have it in your secretions from chest that is sputum then it should be evaluated.
We need to be sure that this is not tuberculosis, pneumonia or any malignancy.
So I would recommend you following:
1. CBC with ESR
2. Chest X ray.
3. PT/INR.
If your tests are clear then it's all just due yo dryness of nose or respiratory mucosa and would respond to Anti allergics like Levocetrizine. Do steam inhalation to be sure.
So get investigated and write back with reports.
I would also sincerely advice you to quit smoking.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX
I had a blood test done 2 days back (CBC+ESR). All the parameters are normal.
I noticed blood in between my teeth and oozing out of gums so went to a dentist. He has prescribed me some medicines and has told me that its a gum infection. Blood in saliva is only during the morning. He told me that its because the blood gets collected during the night and comes in 2-3 spits in the morning.

Do I still need to go in for a chest xray & PT/INR? Actually I don't have any cough (Dry or wet) nor difficulty in breathing. I hope this is just gums. If it continues even after a treatment of gums then I think I should get it evaluated with a chest xray and PT/INR.
Is this the right approach?

Brief Answer:
Wait and watch

Detailed Answer:
Hi, If your dentist is sure that the blood you are getting is out of your gums die to infection, you can wait before getting these investigations.
Let's see, if your problem persists even after his treatment we can go ahead with the investigations.
Good Luck.
