What Causes Bloating And Abdominal Distention?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014
Question: I had a colon surgery in 2010 and a foot of my colon was taken out, before I had that surgery the cloths that I use to fit, after that surgery I couldn't fit them anymore, my stomach had gotten that big at which I would like to think my stomach should have been smaller. So I went to my primary care at that time with that concern about my stomach being so big, he then sends me to another surgeon in 2011 that surgeon never did address my main concern about why my stomach was so big, so he end up putting mesh inside my stomach which didn't make things any better because my stomach is just as big and every time I eat something it seem to activate sometime inside my stomach to make my stomach bloat and become hard like I'm constipated. I've taken laxatives, eat soft foods but whatever I put in my stomach my stomach will become imbloated, so could a obstruction cause this happen?

Brief Answer: not obstruction Detailed Answer: hi, you may very well have a partial obstruction, however it all depends of the type of surgery and how they reconnected the colon, and how was the staple line. you should not be completely obstructed, otherwise you would not be able to move your bowel and you would be vomiting. It is also important to know where was the piece of colon that was removed. If the "ileocecal valve" was removed (which is what divides the small bowel from the colon), then you are at risk of what is called SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), which can cause bloating and abdominal distention / pain. The stomach itself should not be affected by the colon surgery. However you may have a different problem, totally unrelated to your colon surgery. Visiting a gastroenterologist would be helpful. You may need an endoscopy and a colonoscopy if these have not been done. In the meantime I would suggest you taking over the counter probiotics. Simethicone can be taken as well as needed for bloating. Also i would suggest you minimizing foods that can cause bloating, such as fruits and vegetables, sugar suplements (such as Splenda, etc), chewing gum, sodas, spicy foods. Hope that helps, let me know if i answered all your concerns.
