What Causes Bleeding Near Optical Nerve Along With Flashes Of Light And Blurred Vision?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Jan 2015
Question: My optometrist advised me during a routine exam that I have bleeding near the optical nerve on my right eye. He asked me to return the next day and there was further haemorrhaging in the same eye. I have since had two episodes of silver zig zag flashes in both eyes, blurred vision and parts of things missing eg the top half of words in sentences. I have had a dull ache at the back of my head after these episodes. My blood pressure was 120/70 on four occasions over the past week and my kidney function and blood sugar test results are normal. I am stressing about what this is and I am going back to the GP on Monday so he can call the eye specialist who is 600 kms away.

Brief Answer:
It requires examination by indirect ophthalmoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having retinal hemorrhages as told by your optometrist and symptoms of flashes of light, blurred vision, headache...

The most common causes for retinal hemorrhages are systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension.... Since you are not a known diabetic or hypertensive, I would like to rule out local causes in the eye like vitreous hemorrhage, posterior vitreous detachment, retinal vein occlusion...
This requires evaluation of the posterior segment of the eye by indirect ophthalmoscopy by a ophthalmologist.

If it is possible do send me a fundus photograph if it is taken by your optometrist so that I can have a look and advice you accordingly. If you are not having photograph then you need to consult your ophthalmologist for examination.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
