What Causes Black Discoloration Of Tongue?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: my tongue is almost blackish with a larger than normal slit in the middle like deterioration of the tissue...
this was not there 2 days ago, for about 4 days I've had indigestion, nausea, diarrhea loss of appetite...
I treated this like a stomach virus and took the necessary meds. but this morning there is my tongue issue...I feel fine, better even, could this discoloration of my tongue just be dead cells like when you catch a cold and at the end of it the mucous your spitting up and sneezing out turns colors?

Brief Answer:
A course of antivirals can be tried

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
I have read your query and understand your concern.

You seem to have median longitudinal fissure on your tongue.

Fissured tongue can arise from varied causes like inflammations,or poor dental hygiene and particularly facial nerve infections.

Most of these conditions are benign and do not require specific treatment and also do not regularly need a biopsy.

A course of antibiotics like acyclovir for 5-7 days can be responsive.

These drugs should be taken under strict supervision of your doctors.

Regular brushing of the dorsum of the tongue can eliminate the debris.

In case if it does not resolve after 10days ,a tongue biopsy is mandate to rule out malignancy.

I hope this info is helpful to you
Thank you
