Brief Answer: There is no cause for concern Detailed Answer: Namasthe Welcome to healthcare-Magic Greetings of the day Dear Mr XXXXXXX Its quite usual for babies to have such behavior. It could be due to many reasons. It could be due to 1. Insufficient milk: Its quite usual for babies to react in such way due to insufficient milk. They will usually be sucking continuously at breast. 2. Your baby will need lots of cuddling, physical contact and reassurance to comfort her. So it may be that she just wants to be held. Babies derive comfort an pleasure being in tuch with the mother especially while being breast feed by mother. There is absolutely no cause for concern. Also babies do have their own bowel frequency and there is no hard rule that they should pass stools daily. DO NOT GIVE PACIFIERS OR EXTERNAL FEEDS. I would suggest you the following which will definitely help 1. Reassurance to mother: The mother needs to be at peace. If she is unduly worried it will affect her milk output, further worsening the scenario. 2. Adequate rest , nutrition and hydration of the mother 3. Placing the baby on shoulder for burping for good ten minutes. Swaddle the baby and rock it in swing(jhulla) and telling some lullabay will be helpful. If it does not help, let the baby be breast feed while the mother is lying to one side, its okay for the baby to sleep with nipple in the mouth. ( I being a father as well my baby is 3 months of age it helped me, also my other patients have benefited previously ) 4. Change the diaper before sleeping so that the baby has undisturbed sleep. I would also suggest a recipe for mother which will help maintain the milk output Ingredients needed: Ghee( 2 spoons), Whole wheat flour ( 2 spoons) , Pista( 50 gms), Cardomom ( 6 in number), Almonds( 50 gms), Khajur( Dried dates 50 gms), water/milk In a pan pour 2 spoons of ghee, heat it, add 2 spoons of wheat flour (Atta), cook it till golden brown on low flame till its slightly golden in color. Add 2 Cups of water or Milk and keep stirring it continuously making a thin water paste( same like sira consistency). To this add powdered mixture of rest of ingredients grinded in mixer ( pista, almond, khajur, cardomom). Supplement baby breakfast with this recipe, and also can be consumed at night when mother is hungry. Do get back to me for ny further query. Brief Answer: It reduces breast milk output Detailed Answer: Namasthe Dear Mr XXXXXXX As per WHO guidelines and Baby Friendly hospital Initiative by Government of India and also backed up by Indian Association of Pediatric and IAPS, USE of baby pacifiers is totally condemned. Non nutritive sucking is occasionally seen in infants and that occasional demand Is self meet by thumb or hand licking. It serves to self pacify and also acts as analgesic by releasing of endorphins. It brings about satiety. To back up my views, kindly go through this WHO(World Health organization) guidelines on Breast feeding http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2009/0000_eng.pdf?ua=1 Take Care Best Regards Dr Deepak
