What Causes An Ingrown Toenail?

default
Posted on Fri, 26 Aug 2016
Question: I have had this problem for a few months now. My big toe under the toenail is sore. I go to get a pedicure and they always say I have an ingrown toenail on the right side of my big left toe They take the ingrown nail out but it is still sore under the toenail. I wear sneakers and my friend said maybe the toe is rubbing against the top of the sneaker I would like your opinion. Should I stop wearing that particular sneaker and see if it still hurts or do you have another opinion.

Brief Answer:
may be paronychia or area may be inflamed

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that it may be mild paronychia which is infection that usually involves the side of the nail bed or if infection is unlikely simply inflammation of this area.

Paronychia is associated with pain , swelling and redness of the area of the nail bed involved.
In severe cases, pus or discharge may be present

Treatment of paronychia involves the use of warm compresses 2 to 3 times daily along with antibiotics if indicated.

If there is no evidence of infection , then you can consider, discontinuing any problematic shoes, the warm soaks along with a short course of anti inflammatory medication such as naproxen, cataflam or ibuprofen

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
