Posted on Wed, 16 Aug 2017
Question: Dear Doctor,
My daughter is 7 months old. My wife has started going office from last month. So, she is feeding the baby only during morning and evening. For the past 4-5 days, my daughter is not taking her mother's feed and dependent on bottle feed only.

My wife is trying to feed her but, baby doesn't seem to be interested in her feed most of the times now. Please suggest what can we do in this case or should we discontinue to give her mother's feed? Till when mother's feed shall continue? Thanks.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Please discontinue bottle and feed with spoon or paladey

Detailed Answer:
Hi...

1. This problem is because of 2 issues. Firstly, bottle should have been avoided and the feeding should have been done by spoon or paladey. Now the baby has got accustomed to easy way of feeding and hence is not putting in efforts to suck milk from mother's breast. Secondly, the taste of the formula milk. 2nd could not be avoided as mother had to go for work, but there's still time to change the first issue.

2. Stop feeding formula milk by bottle. Start using spoon or paladey instead.

3. If the baby is willing to feed, mother's milk can be given to the baby till 2 years of age.

4. Please do not discontinue mother's breast feeding.
