default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: My husband has been experiencing abdominal pain, bloating, bulging on his left side, he has had a endoscopy, an upper GI both have shown nothing. He has had several CT Scans which basically showed a hernia which we were already aware of as were the Dr.'s. He has at times had nausea, some weight loss, fatigue, his blood work is off somewhat and he is mildly anemic. So far his Drs. have dome up with nothing.

Brief Answer:
as explained in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/85 - pain, bloating, bulging on left side - endoscopy, an upper GI - both nothing - several CT - hernia - at times some nausea, some weight loss, fatigue - mild anemia - Doctors have come up nothing - give it more time and see if pain goes away ....

Please give some additional information:
- How are the stools? color, consistency, frequency, smell?
- Any urinary symptoms?
- Appetite, sleep?
- Since when has he got these symptoms?
-Any other information you would like to share?

My thoughts as per the history provided:
- Since there is a history of hernia, it is possible that he has chronic obstruction due to hernia that may not be seen on CT scan.
- There may be colitis.
- Recurrent sigmoid torsion
- IBS, if all the relevant investigations are normal.

I would advise him the following:
- stool tests on 3 consecutive days.
- X-ray of the abdomen in standing position, particularly when he is in pain and has bloating and bulge on the left side too.
- During the same period a clinical evaluation, examination by a General Surgeon.

I hope this answer helps him/you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
