Posted on Fri, 13 Nov 2015
Question: I went to ER OCTIBER 15 after laying in bed with abdominal pain and nausea. CT scan show evidence of colitis. I am on Cipro 500 mg twice a day. Am still in bed today and suffer crushing cramps and diahrrea after I eat. Am never sick until now. Have missed full week of work and cannot go back still. Had infected tooth extracted 10/9 then dry socket. Then this crushing illness. Can you help me with understanding what caused and when I will be able to go on with my life. Thank you very much

Brief Answer:
get your stool for culture examination and complete haemogram.t

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for putting your query in hcm. Since ct scan is showing evidence of colitis there is no doubt about the diagnosis. It refers to inflammation of the gut - colon where the cause may be related to an infection. I would suggest to take a course of probiotic like saachromyces boulardii along with ciprofloxacin as many a times this infection is resistant to antibiotic. It will take some time and resolve.

If it is not resolved say in the next few days, I suggest that you go to a gastroenterologist who may advise for colonoscopy examination to see for inflammatory bowel disease.

Meanwhile also take some antispasmodic agent like drotavarine for relief in pain. Keep your hydration level well by taking lots of fluid. And avoid dairy products. Also get complete haemogram, stool routine microscopy and stool culture examination so that specific antibiotics can be started.

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you wish you a good health.
