What Causes A Strong Ammonia Smell After Exercising?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Sometimes after running I get a very strong ammonia smell in my nose at the end of the run. This has happened particularly badly after my last two runs and at the same time I had extreme muscle soreness compared with usual. Is this a bad thing? What is causing it?

Brief Answer:
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A ammonia smell in nose after running can be due to
1. Due to a change in the amount / chemical composition of nasal membranes due to sweat your body is producing during exercise.
2. Dehydration, intake of alcohol and caffeine, sinus infection, having exercise immediately after eating and acid reflux can also cause these symptoms.

Try avoiding consuming any food for atleast 1 hour before having exercise.
The muscle soreness is indicative of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Be careful to have plenty of electrolyte rich fluids like Garotade before and during such extensive exercise sessions.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks for that. I am unable to have gatorade etc. at the moment because I am on the RPAH elimination diet until I see a gastroenterologist on 19th XXXXXXX due to gut problems. How can I replace the electrolytes without commercial products?
