What Causes A Positive Result For White Blood Cells In Urine?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Jun 2015
Question: I thought I had a Uti since I did the test strip and got a trace of white blood cells on the result. The doctor called in Cipro for me and I rechecked after the three day course. Still a trace of WBC. Everything else seems normal but the urobilogen (sp?) comes out a brown color not even shown on test strip. I am kind of freaked out now. I so get Uti's often, but what is with the result of the specific test for bile in the urine?

i had just asked the question about a test strip for a Uti and a trace of White blood cells...when i looked at the rest of the test, it was normal except for the urobilnogen which turned a brown color on the strip which isn't even on the strip's range.

Brief Answer:
you need to check liver markers

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome. First you don't need to be worried. Urobilinogen should not be detected by this test but in many cases results are false positive. If this is reliable result then it may indicate liver disorder or hemolytic anemia. I suggest to do classic urine analysis and red blood count and liver markers, this will reveal if there is something wrong.wish you good health.

Thanks. So it is likely this reagent test strip is wrong? This is a regular kind of strip doctors use. Or no? My uti symptoms are the same thanks.

Brief Answer:
strip test is commonly nonspecific

Detailed Answer:
Urine analysis in lab is more reliable, strip tests are just results for some general orientation. Also, there are more or less adequate strip tests. so at this point it should be treated as UTI but try to do these tests I ve mentioned.

Thanks very much Doctor. Could it be IC since I have had Fibromyalgia for several years now?
I am going to the Doc tomorrow are there any other things I should think to ask him, besides the liver markers?
Thanks again for all of your help and I will not bug you any further. Also I will leave great feedback for you now.
Cheers

Brief Answer:
dont worry,feel free to ask.

Detailed Answer:
It may be related with ic and fibromyalgia but probably it is not. I still wouldn't consider this as pathologic result until it is confirmed with more specific tests. In some cases patients with fibromialgia may have higher risk for autoimmune anemia which can be cause of higher urobilinogen. However I think that normal red blood count and normal liver markers should rule out possibility of anything serious. Some bacterias that causes uroinfection can produce urobilinogen as well and in these cases nitrates, ketons or glucose can be found in urine. Last, it would be wise to ckeck kidney parameters and kidney ultrasound.
