What Causes Clonazepam And Topamax Drug Interactions?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Apr 2015
Question: My sister is on at least eight medications and is acting strangely. A pharmacist told me to go to drugs.com and enter the names and see whet they do and how they enter act with one another. I typed in
FERROUS SULFATE 325 (65 FE) MG TABS and it says there is no drug by that name. I typed in the NDC# 00536-1009-01 and get the same answer.
She is also on CLONAZEPAM 2 MG TABS; DOXYCYCLINE MONOHYDRATE 50MG CAPS; FLUOXETINE HCL 20MG CAPS; TOPIRAMATE 200MG TABS; FOLIC ACID 1MG TABS; and OMEPRAZOLE 20MG CPDR.
How do these impact each other. She falls a lot, is slow to respond to conversation, often does not know what we are saying, and appears to be drugged up to the hilt.

Brief Answer:
There are interactions

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
the drugs you've mentioned do have some interactions. The main interactions, which can explain some of the side effects, are between fluoxetine-clonazepam and fluoxetine-topiramate. Speaking in general all drugs that cause central nervous system depression, may have an additive effect when used together. These drugs in particular do have an additive effect and may cause drowsiness and slow-thinking.

Dose titration has to be done by her doctor, because her doctor should balance side-effects with expected benefit from treatment.

There is also a probably minor interaction iron and omeprazole which results in reduced iron absorption and a more serious interaction between concurrent administration of iron and doxycycline because they may react in the gastrointestinal system and also reduced absorption.

I hope I've helped!

Kind Regards!
