What Cause Night Sweats While On Microgynon?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: Hi,
I had been having night sweats since March 2014, when I first started taking birth control pills (Microgynon). I got many tests done, tbc, HIV to find the cause but they all came negative. I decided to stop the pill to see if it's caused by the pill. My night sweats got way worse. It's been 15 days since I stopped the pill and I'm basically sleepless. I get completely wet during the night, I have to change the sheets and clothes.

I'm worried about Ovarian Failure Syndrome. I don't have any other symptoms other than night sweats. I had my periods while on the pill ( but I know pill might mask it) and before I started it I had regular and heavy periods.

In addition to this I have high thyroid antibodies but normal T3,T4,TSH levels.

Could you please comment on this? Thanks

Brief Answer:
GIVE YOURSELF ONE MORE WEEK

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Night sweats is a rare, but possible side effect of birth control pills.
Give yourself another week to completely wean your body off the hormones and then see if it gets better.
If it does not, birth control as a potential reason is ruled out.
Regarding premature ovarian failure, that can be easily confirmed.
The diagnosis is made quite readily by simple bloodwork.
Wait for your next period.
On day 2, go for measuring the following levels - FSH, LH, Serum estradiol.
The results will tell you if you have premature ovarian failure, which again is rare, but not unheard of, at 29.
Since the T3, T4 and TSH are in normal range, do not worry about that.
All the best

Thank you.

What I am curious about is, if it was ovarian failure, would I still have the night sweats while I was on the pill? Because I was still sweating at nights even though I was taking estrogen.

Also I don't have any other symptoms like hot flashes or vaginal dryness.

Brief Answer:
OVARIAN FAILURE LESS LIKELY

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
If it was ovarian failure, the pills would have made it better.
However, the other thing is that it has worsened since you stopped the pills, that made me think of ovarian failure as a possibility.
Since you are having regular cycles, I think the night sweats were because of the pil, and you should be fine in a week or two as the pill effects wear off.

Thanks.

I used to have regular cycles before the pill, I don't know what happened in the last 6 months because pill can mask it.

Is there any other problems that could be associated with low estrogene other than ovarian failure?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
PLEASE CLARIFY

Detailed Answer:
Ovarian failure causes low estrogen and not the other way around.
So are you asking me for reasons other than ovarian failure that could cause low estrogen, or are you asking me for the manifestations of ovarian failure, apart from low estrogen levels ?

Hello,

Reasons other than ovarian failure that could cause low estrogen, please.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
OTHER REASONS ARE NOT REALLY PROBABLE

Detailed Answer:
Estrogen is produced by the ovaries.
OVarian failure is leading cause.
The ovaries in turn are controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary - the brain, in layman terms.
So hypothalamo - pituitary failure could cause ovarian failure too.
This would manifest in lots of other ways, such as low adrenal hormones, low thyroid levels etc.
Hence, selective depression of estrogen levels almost exclusively points towards primary ovarian failure as a reason, other than the rare ones.
Hope I am clear enough on this point.
