Question: my 23 yr old son was told he had a murmur so they did an echo which showed right side dilation. His doctor is scheduling an appt with a cardiologist for him. What can this mean?

Hi,

Murmurs can occur due to multiple causes.
The most common cause identified at this age is likely to be a Biuspid Pulmonary Valve or septal defects.

Most of these defects cause enlargement of the right side of the heart. Its a compensatory mechanism.

If a dilation is found without any underlying valvular or septal defect, then this means there could be increase in the Pulmonary pressure i.e the right sided pressures.

A detailed cardiologic examination and evaluation can pinpoint the cause.

Be reassured as he does not have any symptoms.

Hope this answers your query.
