Question: What can cause a shadow on a ct scan of the brain? The only reason I took one was for headaches.

Brief Answer:
Probably Cerebral infarction or primary lesion.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

"Shadow" on CT scan or hypo density has several causes. I can mention: cerebral infarction or ischemia, infectious cerebral diseases, primary or secondary brain neoplasms. You didn't mention if the CT scan was made with or without intravenous contrast. If it was with contrast material administration, then the lesion most probably is a cerebral infarction or ischemia. Cerebral MRI should give a more probable diagnosis.
A good thing is that you don't have any neurological deficits. Hope this answers your question.

the scan was done without contrast. since I have no neurological symptoms, is it more likely that it is not a tumor?

Brief Answer:
Symptoms depend on location.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for asking again. Having no symptoms is a good thing, it means the lesion is in first stages, or is too small to cause damage. The more probably lesion is a ischemic lesion, however there is need for more information from CT to have better orientation. "Shadow" could be from different causes. Hope this helps.
