Question: My 72 year old husband has been on pain medication for over thirty years. He just made a mistake and took double 30mg.oxymorphone and double oxycontin 2o mgs, so 100 mgs altogether and a Lunesta. He is very used to taking higher doses of these meds, but we are concerned. He takes them for spinal stenosis and goes to a pain specialist Should we be concerned and what could we do?

Where do I see my answer? How long will it take?

Brief Answer:
For now, monitor him closely for any signs of respiratory depression.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this mistake that your husband has made. Higher doses of this drug can be administered. However, the main fear is that of a possible breathing difficulties as a result of over sedation. I will suggest that you watch him closely for any signs of excessive sleepiness, dizziness and difficulties sleeping. This would be all if now. If you identify and of the above, then get him to the hospital ER and if you do not observe any, there is no reason to panic at this time.

I wish your husband well. Please, let him stick to the dosage of medications as prescribed by hi physician.
