Posted on Mon, 18 May 2015
Question: hi. i am prescribed 2/ 5mg. ir oxycodones every 6 hours by the va, i am a vet 61 yrs. young. i was out of town and did not bring enough meds. my brother gave me 3/ 10mg. methadones that i took 1 every 8 hrs. to get me home and reduce irritability because of being on oxycodone for several years. just my luck, my va doctor left a message on my phone to come in for random testing. i took the methadone 4/24/15 and need to get tested within 3-4 days. when will the methadone be untraceable in blood or urine. i weigh 155lbs. and no fat, and get moderate exercise. how long should i wait to be clean of it.

Brief Answer:
It stays in the system a while.

Detailed Answer:
It is a long acting narcotic. At high constant doses it's half life can be up to 44 hrs !
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/0000
This results in its staying in the body a long time with the withdrawal being prolonged compared to other narcotics.
Fortunately many people abuse it very sporadically and at relatively low doses. If someone were on methadone maintenence at 100 mg a day it might be a while to clear. The abused doses of 10-50 mg one time... are cited in the ABAM textbook as clearing in about 3 days. It also depends on the test. They are basing this on the common screening dipstick method detection at 300 microgram. The Mass spect at 5 times lower limit will be closer to one week.

About 3 days.
