What Are The Various Causes For Trimester Abortions?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: hi, I have had 2 misscarriages , the 1st one at 11 weeks and baby's age was 8.5 weeks , it was a natural miscarriage but I still had a positive pregnancy test until a month after or so and the bleeding was normal and the clottings were fine and I saw the gestional sac when i passed it… however, 3 month later I got pregnant but unfortunately it also ended with a misscarriage…. the second misscarriage was at 7.5 weeks, the clottings were very big and I lost a lot of blood much more than the 1st missscarriage… during pregnancy i was always cold… the clotting size were the size of my hand is that normal? I had to have a d&c because of the excessive bleeding… can you tell me if the big clotts indicate anything abnormal? may be it indicates why I had the misscarriage.. unfortunatelly my dr will not do anything unless I have 3 misscarriage or more. I am 31 years old , very healthy I dont smoke or drink… i took all my vitamins while pregnant and I only eat natural stuff like vegies , protein and fruits and only use olive oil or coconut oil and I take my pregvit daily and i also took duphastone 10mg twice a day and never had any serguries or health problems€¦ my mom and sisters never had a misscarriage and my husband is pretty healthy as welll…

Brief Answer:
genetic causes are more common

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
Its good to know that you dont have any drug addiction.
In my opinion there are various causes for first trimester abortions. They are:-
1)Genetic anamolies- most common.
2)Infections- TORCH infections ,chlamydial infection ,Gonorrheal infection etc.
3)Hormonal abnormalities - thyroid abnormalities,diabetes,progesterone insufficiency.
4)Immunological factors- Here the mother s body might reject the fetus leading to miscarriage.
So in case of frequent miscarriages all the above causes should be evaluated.
Age also might be a factor. And the risk of genetic anamolies increase after 35 years of age.
The big clots doesn't indicate anything specifically.Sometimes when the spontaneous miscarriage occurs some products of conception might be retained in uterus. And the uterus tries to expel that retained products. In this process the excess bleeding associated with clots occur but still the products might not come out.During that time D&C is done to remove them and stop bleeding.
Dont worry madam even after frequent miscarriages there is every chance for normal pregnancy.
The miscarriages might or might not run in families. So you are experiencing even though your mother and sister dont have.
Plan your pregnancy after 3 months.Take folic acid tablet one per day one month before planning the pregnancy.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.

Brief Answer:
unexplained causes are upto 60%

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,I got your query.I understand your concern.

In my opinion all the causes which I explained you in my previous query might be investigated.

1)Karyotyping of husband and wife to exclude any genetic abnormalities.
2)Toxoplasmosis antibodies IgG and IgM ,VDRL to exclude TORCH infections.
3)Thyroid profile to exclude thyroid abnormalities.
4)Fasting and postprandial blood sugar to exclude diabetes.
5)Autoimmune screening like anticardiolipin antibodies.
6)Endocervical swab to detect chlamydia, mycoplasma and bacterial vaginosis.

About 40 to 60% of abortions remained unexplained.

Dont worry usually a normal pregnancy might occur after subsequent abortions.

Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss further.
Best regards...Dr srilatha
