What Are The Symptoms Of Colic Pain And Ear Pain In Children?

Question: Hi Doctor,

For the last 2 days my 1 year old daughter is crying a lot. though she is not crying continuously, but whenever we are trying to make her sleep or not giving something she is asking for immediately (like toys or similar things). We are just confused that if she is suffering from any kind of colic pain or ear pain or just being stubborn and not interested to sleep because of some kind of separation anxiety.
Though we are from XXXXXXX but we are working in XXXXXXX and the doctors here seems to be very commercial and not able to provide any reason for the same.

Can you please advice on the below

1) is there any way to understand if my 1 year kid is suffering from ear or colic pain?
2) Is it safe to apply calpol or crocin drops when she is crying before sleeping
3) sometime we also give her Neopeptin/Colicaid if we feel she is having some kind of colic pain ( though there is no sureshot way to understand what exactly happened to her).. Is these medicines safe or have any kind of side effects?
I was talking about the separation anxiety as I took a 1 year break and joined work last week, my parents and a XXXXXXX is taking care of her in the day time now. And she became more nagy now than before , so this may be due to some developmental issue , due to some health issues or may be she just want me around her 24*7.
but how can I understand that? please help me...

Brief Answer:
Proper burping is essential

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic and for choosing me specifically to answer your query.

* There is a reasonable probability that the child is crying due to overdistension or colic. It so happens that the child often ingests air along with the feeds and this causes abdominal distension causing uneasiness in the child and the child could be crying due to the same. Proper burping is the solution. You (or the alternate care givers) need to hold the child upright on the lap for about 20 mins after each feed. If that does not help, Colicaid Drops 6 drops can be given as and when required. That should help in relieving abdominal distension or the resultant colic.

* Crocin or calpol drops contain paracetamol. It is very safe to be given but for fever and pain. It will not be helpful in abdominal colic and would be meaningless to be given.

* Neopeptin is meant to help in digestion but there is reasonable doubt whether it actually helps. It being a protein, there is significant chance of its itself getting digested in the stomach acid (which is meant to help in digestion) insted of contributing to the digestive process. Moreover, there is no reason to assume that she needs digestive support.

* By one year of age, the child should be able to smile back, sit on her own as well as stand on her own. If that is the case, the development is proper. If that is not the case, she has developmental delay and needs to be assessed at a centre with facilities of neurodevelopmental screening. Developmental issues will not make her naggy. I have already explained the reasons in the earlier question.

* Lethargy is the sign to look out for. If that is not there, chances are that the child is healthy.

Hope that helps.
