What Are The Signs Of A Concussion After A Head Injury In A Toddler?

Question: My toddler daughter stood up quickly while we were dining at a restaurant over the holiday weekend (saturday). The plastic chair gave way, tipped as she stood up and she fell back onto the sidewalk. She screamed like crazy immediately and seemed shocked but quickly was back to her usual self, was never unconscious. An upper tooth was bleeding and there was a little blood coming from her nose, which was scary but i wiped the blood from her nose away and only the tooth bleeding persisted, for about 5-10 minutes. There was no vomitting, no noticeable bruising or bump on her head (or anywhere). She didnt say anything about her head hurting, we only heard about her teeth and thought we'd need to go to a dentist when we returned home. She seemed fine the rest of the day but later complained "my head hurts" ...the next day no symptoms whatsoever, but two days later again said "my head hurts"... And when I asked her this afternoon 'does your head hurt?' She said yes. Its hard to know if she's just saying yes or if its really hurting, as she shows no signs of lethargy, no visible signs in her face, with her speech, ability to walk, move limbs etc. she was at Summer Camp today and was running and singing and acting normally. Any advice? What do these symptoms tell you?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry as she is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic. I understand your concern. First be reassured that your kid is normal. I will suggest you danger signs of head injury -
1. Vomiting continuously
2. Seizures
3. Watery or bloody discharge from ears and nose
4. Unconsciousness
5. Altered sensorium (level of consciousness) or behavior.

If none of them are present, I don't think you should worry about his trivial head injury. For pain you can give oral Paracetamol in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose every 4-6th hourly.

But among these your toddler daughter had a nose bleed but as it was not consistent you need not worry. But usually even something bad had happened in the brain like a contusion or bleed usually it will show some sings like persistent vomiting or irritability or excessive sleepiness during the next 48 hours. Its almost more than 3 days now and she is playing around.

Children have the habit of showing off their trivial injuries as a past of attention seeking just for enthusiasm sake and to themselves caressed in this age. To be XXXXXXX with you even my son (2years 9 months) does the same for a trivial play time scratch or bruise for the next 2-3 days.

But a the same time if you find any of the above mentioned danger signs without mentioning them to her, I urge you to go to a pediatrician immediately as soon as you discover them.

Hoe my answer has guided you properly. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.
