Brief Answer:
Baker's cyst

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are wondering what a Baker's cyst is? The Baker's cyst is a fluid collection in the soft part behind the knee. This is caused by chronic inflammation of the knee producing this fluid sack. The only treatment is to have it surgically removed. You could also use inflammatories to help the pain and it may shrink a little but it will not completely go away. As long as you are not in pain we do not usually need to have the cyst removed. This is not life threatening.

Occasionally if the cyst gets big enough it can rupture and cause swelling redness in the back of the knee. Again not dangerous just painful.

In summary
1. Baker's cyst
2. Fluid sack collection behind the knee
3. Treat with NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naprosyn
4. Surgical excision
5. Occasionally will rupture and cause pain and redness on the back of the knee and leg.
