Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: I am taking Protonix do you know of side effects? If so what are they? Also trying to take CVs brand probiotic capsule. along with protonix I tak 20 mg Pepcid at night. Still have terrible indigestion. I am seeing my doctor and having tests or rather had some. Hard to tell this indigestion from the heart problem I have. Also wondering if Gas X has a negative side effect. thank you

Brief Answer:
GERD and indigestion

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering with indigestion and GERD. You are currently taking protonix and pepcid. The Protonix has the same side effect profile as nexium or prilosec. Which is diarrhea. The addition of Gas X will not affect your medications but may cause increase risk of diarrhea. I think taking the probiotic may help reduce your risk of diarrhea.

I have other suggestions to help reduce you indigestion problem. One elevate the head of your bed by 3 inches. This can be done by placing bricks under the headboard and incline the bed. You only need ot do this once and this will help keep acid from getting into your esophagus as you lay down at night. The second is don't wear tight clothing and do not over eat. Over eating and tight clothing will put pressure on the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus and cause reflux.

When taking the protonix take it in the morning 30 minutes before eating. Then you must eat after 30 minutes to help keep the medication from being degraded. This you must do with any of the PPI medications on the market to make them work the most for you.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions
