Question: Hi my son has been in hospital for 6 weeks but is now home thank God! He was admitted for drug induced psychosis. He was Smoking hydroponic marajuana for approx. 3 months and also had two LSD tablets over the last year. He is currently taking 15 mg of olanzapine a night . He is doing well but I am concerned about the side effects of this drug and am looking to supplement him with minerals and vitamins but want to make sure nothing will contraindicate. What vitamins or minerals could have contraindications please and what is the best source of recovery?

Brief Answer:
you can give vitamin supplements but not mixture or krill tabletes

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern for your young son.

He is on olanzapine for drug induced psychosis. It is an antipsychotic medicine used for psychotic problem. As his problem is drug induced his medicine will be gradually decreased and stopped. Olanzapine can cause sedation, increase appetite , weight gain as common side effects. It can cause some metabolic disturbance but that is after use of long years. In his case that is not the possibility. So no need to worry about this drug and its side effects. His doctor will take care about the same.

You can give vitamin C and B complex supplement to him.I would not recommend noni juice , a durian drink and a spiralina powder mixture as there is no scientific evidence that it is useful as well as this can harm liver. He is young and history of jaundice so in my opinion do not give him.

I also would not recommend krill tablets. There is also no evidence of usefulness in such cases as well as it can cause bad breath, heartburn, fishy taste, upset stomach, nausea, and loose stools.I am not used to with this substance so you can take opinion of his treating doctor for the same.

It is good that he has been discharged and improving. In my opinion give him healthy food what he likes. Nothing specific is indicated from scientific point of view.Give yourself and him sometime. I can understand your apprehension. He will be completely fine in few weeks. Main target should be prevention of relapse to drug exposure. Regular follow up and counselling with treating doctor are must.

Hope I have answered your query I will be happy to help further.
