What Are The Possible Reasons For A Seizure Attack?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: On 22nd April 2016 at 1 am, I suffered a Seizure attack. It continued for 2-3 minutes followed by unconsciousness for half an hour. Meanwhile, my wife took me to the nearby hospital (Yatharth Hospital, Noida) and I was admitted there for 2 days (1 day in ICU and 1 day in normal room). Since then I am taking treatment from there.

The reports for CT Scan Head, MRI Brain and EEG are normal and nothing unusual appeared in the results.
I am prescribed to take Encorate Crono twice a day.
I am advised to take some precautions like - No driving, No swimming, No movie watching in dark room, reducing the use of XXXXXXX and laptop.

My questions:
What could be the possible reasons behind a seizure attack?
Does poor eating habits like eating 2-3 days old cooked food can lead to seizure disorder?
What other precautions I should take?

Brief Answer:
Seizures induced by Altered Blood Biochemistry. Precautions to be taken

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.Bruno Mascarenhas, and I am happy to answer your queries. I have read your question with care and understand your concerns. Let me try to help you.

Question 1 : What could be the possible reasons behind a seizure attack?
Answer 1 : Seizure can be caused by
(a) Structural Abnormalities in Brain. Eg Cancer or Infection
(b) Increased Pressure inside the Skull
(c) Electrical Abnormalities in Brain
(d) Biochemical Abnormalities in Brain Eg : Low Sugar, Low Oxygen

Of these
CT and MRI will show the Structural Abnormalities
EEG will show the Electrical Abnormalities

If your seizure was because of increased pressure inside the skull or if it was because of Biochemical Abnormalities, you cannot find the cause from CT, MRI and EEG.

I would opine that Biochemical Abnormality is the cause in your episode

Question 2 : Does poor eating habits like eating 2-3 days old cooked food can lead to seizure disorder?
Answer 2 : Yes. That is One Possibility and it causes Seizures by altering the biochemistry of brain

Question 3 : What other precautions I should take?
Answer 3 : You have to take the following precautions

(a) Take the Drugs Regularly
(b) Bathroom / Toilet Door Should not be locked from inside
(c) Do not step into Wells, Ponds, Lakes, Falls
(d) Don’t Lock the room from inside when you are alone in the room
(e) Don’t Drive
(f) Don’t use sharp instruments

In addition, we need to find what caused the seizure. It can be a temporary factor or a recurrent factor. If it was a temporary factor (improper food), you need not worry
But
It is better to do a complete evaluation.

You have mentioned about CT, MRI, EEG
You XXXXXXX not mentioned about Lab Results. You have to also check whether they are normal or whether there was an anomaly

Hope you found the answer helpful.

If you need any clarification / have doubts / have additional questions / have follow up questions, then please do not hesitate in asking again. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Thank you very much Dr. XXXXXXX for such a detailed and sincere response.

Regarding CT Scan, MRI and EEG - Yes all these reports are normal with no anomaly. I have soft copies of these reports and Dicom images as well; if you would like I can attach those reports and images in the reports section for your further evaluation.

Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Infection may have caused this seizures

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

I have gone through the reports.

There was Increased White Blood Cells in the Blood when you had been admitted. That has come down the next date. You probably had an infection which had caused your seizures. Since the episode has passed, we cannot now find out what exactly was the infection.

Other than the precautions I had mentioned earlier, there is not much we can do at the moment. You have to continue the drugs and review regularly with your Neurologist. If the seizures do not recur, your neurologist will taper the dose of drugs and slowly withdraw them. You have to be patient.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

If you need any clarification / have doubts / have additional questions / have follow up questions, then please do not hesitate in asking again. I will be happy to answer your questions.
