What Are The Genetic Disorder Risks Involved In Consanguineous Marriages?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Sir,

Thanks for looking in to my query.

This is with regard to the decision which I want to take regarding my marriage.

I have an idea of marrying my father's sister's daughter. Will there be any genetic problems for the kids in the future because of this? If so, what is the probability.

What you would advice if I want to marry her? Please call out the risks if any.

Additional Info : My parents are close relatives. Her parents are not relatives.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to the HCM

I understand your concerns but don't worry. Congratulations for your decision. As you are planning to go for a consanguineous marriage with your first cousin, I would like to recommend both of you to go for premarital screening and counselling.

Consanguineous marriages are associated with an increased risk for congenital malformations and autosomal recessive diseases such as thalassemia, Sickle cell disease, other hemoglobinopathies. But demographic and socioeconomic confounders need to be well considered. No major adverse associations with reproductive parameters such as miscarriages and fertility have been documented.

Now a days, a preconception screening is widely used to check for such conditions in the offspring.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Take care
